Individual Female Showcases in Florida

09/08/2009 - 15:37

My daughter is a varsity starting junior who plays forward. Her AAU participation has gotten her some recruiting attention but the colleges she is mostly interested in are located in Florida while we live in Maryland. She is participating in some MD and PA shootout showcases but I am looking for a showcase she could potentially participate in that might draw Florida coaches- any thoughts?

...Need advice about daughters coach

My 13 year old daughter just completed her AAU basketball season playing for an elite team. This is actually her third year playing for an elite team and without a doubt the worst season for us. She is a very talented and athletic young lady with the heart and desire it takes to succeed. However, this year we experienced our first taste of questionable coaching. This was his first year with this Elite program and from our knowledge got the position thru mutual friends of the director. From the beginning, he was a loose cannon.

Should Sports be 'Dumbed Down?'

The idea of “dumbed down” sports is a scary concept for some. It can be hard for many adults, especially coaches, to accept. The mere idea of doing so can bring their coaching into question and evoke feelings of hesitation, resistance and fear. Many are often quick to admit, “My dad never ‘dumbed down’ sports for me, and I turned out fine.” However, watch a seasoned coach try to teach a young child without “dumbing down” sports, and they fail miserably. Still, purists claim “dumbed down” sports coaching is anything but natural.

By Bob Bigelow, Youth Sports Expert & Community Speaker, © 2008

1. Make sure your children know that win or lose, scared or heroic, you love them, appreciate their efforts, and are not disappointed in them.

2. Try your best to be completely honest about you child’s athletic capability, their competitive attitude, sportsmanship, and actual skill level.

...Basketball shoe deals?

With 2 of my kids in basketball I need to buy a few pairs of shoes for each season and camps; it's getting crazy. I search the web for deals, search for coupons, and trying to find free shipping. If my kids didn't beat their shoes too bad, at the end of the season they put their shoes on ebay or Craig’s list and people actually buy them! I try to find sites that specialize in discount sports equipment but it has to be quality so my kids approve.
