Ankle Sprains Most Common High School Sports Injury, Study Finds

Ankle sprains are the most common single injury in high school sports, accounting for one in six of all high school sports-related injuries, finds a new study. (1)

Analyzing data collected through the National High School Sports-Related Injury Surveillance System (RIO), an Internet-based reporting system, researchers found that ankle sprains accounted for16% of sports-related injuries in 20 high school sports serious enough to require medical attention by a certified athletic trainer or physician and restrict an athlete's participation for 1 or more days.

Cards' Doctor To Answer Youth Baseball Questions

Do an internet search on "Baseball Performance Training and Injury Prevention" and you will get pages and pages of information. It's easy for a baseball parent to get so overwhelmed with information that they run the risk of making decisions based upon partial information while comparing it to recommendations on various websites.

Mid-Back Pain Can Affect Athletic Performance

When people think of athletes with back pain, they mosty think of pain in the neck or lower back. As a result, the middle part of the spine, called the thoracic spine, is commonly overlooked. But just as other regions of the back, the mid-spine can negatively impact a young athlete's performance and risk of injury.

Why is the mid-back area so important to athletes? Why types of problems can occur? What can be done to reduce risk of injury and improve performance?

6 Ways To Improve Safety Of Sports Officials

The tragic death of Utah soccer official Ricardo Portillo earlier this month after allegedly being punched in the head by a player to whom he had just shown a yellow card is an incident that has received significant national publicity, as well it should have. Sadly, it's just one of the low points in a youth sports culture that has become increasingly unsportsmanlike.

Why Tougher Rules for Dangerous Hits in High School Hockey Will Not Work

As I watch the Stanley Cup playoffs I am reminded each spring about the ever-changing rules in hockey: One set for the regular season, and one set for playoffs. Or should I say one rule book and two or more interpretations of the enforcement of the rules in the book. Clearly there is much more leeway from the rule book during the playoffs. Players tripped on breakaways do not draw a penalty. Obvious rule violations are ignored. But lets be clear about the NHL: the league is an entertainment business that happens to play hockey. Fans like the brutality and violence. It sells tickets so it is allowed to happen.

Eliminating Dangerous Hits Focus Of New High School Ice Hockey Rules

In continuing efforts to minimize the risk of injury in the sport, the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Ice Hockey Rules Committee has approved changes strengthening the language of rules on dangerous hits and giving game officials the discretion to penalize players who illegally hit players from behind with a game misconduct if they deem the hit flagrant.

The checking-from-behind change was one of four major rules revisions approved by the committee at its April 22-23 meeting in Indianapolis, changes which were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Sandbagging A Baseline Test: Much Harder Than One Might Think

Recent reports in the media (1,2) suggest that some professional athletes - most famously, Denver Bronco quarterback Peyton Manning(1) - intentionally underperform on a baseline computerized neurocognitive test - "sandbag" the test, in the parlance - so that, in the event they suffer a concussion and are then asked to take a post-concussion test, they will perform comparatively better and therefore be allowed to return to play sooner. Indeed, a recent article in the New York Times (2) suggests that reports of other N.F.L. players, besides Manning, trying to subvert the test are "rampant."

A Mother's Day Wish List

It's May once again. Time for spring sports, warmer weather, longer days, and, of course, Mother's Day. This year, instead of celebrating mothers with the usual cards and flowers, I have put together a special wish list for the mothers, grand mothers, step mothers and other caregivers in this country with kids playing sports.

Here's this year's list:
