Family Ties
By Joy Fawcett
Tuesday, July 24: A family is a group of people that you grow and share your life with. You may have a small family all under one roof or a big family all across the world. You may even consider the people you work with family, and why not? You're usually with them for the majority of the week, you coexist together and you rely on each other. Personally, I like to consider my teammates a part of my family, but I also consider my family as part of my team.
As I've mentioned before, my daughters usually go everywhere I do. They go to practices, home games and even road trips. This means that Katey and Carli don't have the average seven and four-year-old lives. While most kids are playing around the neighborhood, our girls are often traveling the country (and the world) having fun on the soccer field and in hotels. I have always been amazed at how adaptable my kids have been. It seems that they can have a fun time just about anywhere.
I feel that the travel has been an enriching experience for Katey, Carli, and now Madi. While they don't always remember the details of their travel, places such as Australia, Norway, Germany, Portugal and just about every major city in the U.S. has left great memories and opened them up to knowing that there is more to the world than just the local neighborhood. But, while traveling the world with the National Team and the Spirit has been a great experience, Walt and I also feel very strongly about keeping balance in their lives.
So when I got back from Carolina last week, I felt that it was important to make sure that Katey and Carli had a chance to spend lots of time around the house and with their friends and cousins. It worked out well because the Spirit gave us four days off, which allowed me to do some additional training and spend some time with my family. This week was playtime for the kids and also a little bit of a break for me.
The time also gave me a chance to catch up on all of the things at home that just seem to slip through the cracks when I get really busy. So while the kids were out playing with their friends, I had a chance to get myself organized and get caught up on some housework.

While Walt was at work, I took the kids to the neighborhood pool with their cousins and my sister. By the way, a little parenting tip, if you really want to tire your kids out, nothing works quite like a good day at the pool! We also had our annual family outing to the Orange County Fair. The food and shopping are great, and the kids love the farm animals and rides.
Since this summer has been so busy with the new baby, my training and the Spirit schedule, this week gave us a truly needed break. It also gave us a chance to get back to basics and focus on getting some balance in our lives. Next week, we begin our playoff run with a road game against the Bay Area CyberRays, followed by a busy schedule, which includes two games a week for the remainder of the season. See ya' next week, and remember Go Spirit!

Post Pregnancy Workout Regimen: Staying Active with the Family
It's been at least six weeks now since Madi's birth and our family has quickly adjusted to the “Fawcett Five.” My doctors cleared me to fully exercise and our family is now out and about doing the things we love. Running around and staying active as a family makes our busy lives exciting. It's been a challenge finding ways to workout and incorporate the kids, but it's also been fun! Below are a few of the workouts our family enjoys, I hope you can benefit from them too. As always, make sure you have completely recovered from giving birth and your physician has cleared you before attempting the exercises below.

Cardio:
I've found that family jogs and bike rides are not only a great way of fitting cardiovascular exercises into your daily routine, but it's fun for the whole family. Walt and I put the kids in strollers and to the park we go. The girls like it because it's like a ride for them, then they get to play at the park, and for Walt and I, the strollers add resistance to our run. Below are some variations of our family routine, please take precautions when doing any exercises and only workout at your fitness level.
Beginning
Take the family for a brisk one mile walk. Be sure to tightenyour muscles to increase overall strength.
Intermediate Routine:
Lightly jog or walk for one to two miles.
Advanced Routine:
Run through hilly streets to Run through hilly streets to more muscle.
Weights/ Strength:
With a newborn in arms, you may also be carrying a baby bag, a car seat and a stroller. As you may have guessed, your everyday routine is strengthening your arm muscles. Since I know that picking up the kids and toting their stuff around is great for the arms, I like to focus my strength training on my legs. Below is a step-up exercise that will help you firm up your buns and tighten your legs. It should be easy to do when your at the park with the family or when your in the house just hanging out. I've found that my girls love to jump around, so they actually enjoy doing this with me….
Beginning:
Step up to a bench or stair that seems to be a challenging height. One leg at a time, squeeze your muscles going up and down. Try tocomplete three sets of 8 on each leg.
Intermediate Routine:
Follow the same suggestions for the Beginners level, but try to complete three sets of 10 or 12 on each leg.
Advanced Routine:
Instead of stepping up, jump up to the bench or step youhave chosen. This will require some practice, but be patient and the balancewill come. Try three sets of 10.

Challenges:
: Working out with the entire family isn't always the easiest thing to do, but try to make it fun and exciting for everyone. If you can succeed in fulfilling the family's needs, then you're on your way to a fun, family workout. The difficulty for Walter and me has been finding an activity that is challenging for us and still easy enough for our little girls. Sometimes they get burnt out and want to do something completely different than our planned exercise. We've found that if you compromise and make a point to include their ideas into the routine, everyone seems to be a lot happier… and healthier.

Personal Triumph:
This week I spent a lot of quality time with my family while maintaining my personal training. It was important for me to get my ankles back in good condition while the team had a few days off and my family workouts helped me reach that goal.
