Concussion Tips For Parents
--Any signs or symptoms may signal concussion.

--Signs and symptoms may occur days after impact (delayed onset more common in younger athletes).

--An athlete doesn't need to hit his head to suffer a concussion.

--Helmets and mouth guards do not prevent concussions.

--Neuroimaging (CT/MRI) studies are usually normal with concussion.

--Youth athletes require more cautious, conservative care.

--A second hit before healing from the first can cause rare Second Impact Syndrome.

--Immediate rest (both physical and cognitive) helps reduce recovery time.

--Practice Brain Hygiene (baseline neuropsychological testing).

Rosemarie Scolaro Moser Dr. Moser is the Director of the Sports Concussion Center of New Jersey, Director of Research Programs for the International Brain Research Foundation, and MomsTeam.com's youth sports concussion neuropsychologist, and a member of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Pediatric Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Panel. A licensed psychologist, certified school psychologist, and board certified neuropsychologist and rehabilitation psychologist, Dr. Moser received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania where she also served on the faculty.
