Youth team snack

When it's your turn to buy the team snack, what types of items do you bring? As a new sports-parent, I'm looking for snack suggestions. Thanks.

Post-game Snacks

I found the following information on healthy snacks for after a game. Now, in 16 years I have yet to see someone show up with a basket of freshly baked low-fat muffins, but I guess it could happen.

Immediately following a game or intense practice, kids need lots of fluids to replace what they've lost to perspiration. Milk (including chocolate milk), fruit juice, and water are all be good choices. If they've really been sweating, they also need sodium and potassium, which is why sports drinks contain these electrolytes.

Finally, carbohydrates and proteins help kids refuel and re-energize. While some sugar is OK, don't go overboard; it's not wise to reinforce the idea that sweets are a good way to reward yourself for a job well done.

If you're providing a team snack, find out if any children have allergies so you can avoid those dangerous foods.

Post-game healthy snack suggestions:

* Fresh fruit (see list above) or applesauce
* Fruit frozen into kabobs or pops
* Dried fruit, including leathers or roll-ups made with 100% fruit
* Fruit-flavored gelatin
* Granola bars, but watch out for high calorie, fat, and sugar content
* Cookies: Best choices are fig bars, oatmeal cookies, animal crackers
* Crackers or bagels: Opt for whole-grain versions if you can; top with peanut butter, cheese or cream cheese
* Yogurt
* Pudding
* String cheese
* Popcorn, pretzels, baked chips
* Muffins (low-fat)
* Trail mix (with dried fruit instead of candy; beware nut allergies)

Juice boxes are a classic! Also any type of small health bar is great for the whole team.

Organizing Team Snacks

I am a new "Team Mom." I am not new to organized sports but new to my responsibilities as organizer.  In all other leagues/sports we have been on, every parent/child contributed to at least one after-game snack unless it was a significant financial burden to the family.  I recently learned from some parents that it is hard to get the parents of this league to agree to participate in sharing the snack responsiblity.

 I am not sure why, as it signigicantly lowers any one persons financial obligations if they were to purchase snack for their own child every game.  Do you have any tips on how to communicate this in an effective way that will get everyone on board? Has anyone else had this problem?
