While increase in number of youth sports injuries is result of greater participation, especially by girls, says Lyle Micheli, M.D., Director, Division of Sports Medicine at Children's Hospital Boston, some suggest that today's kids are more prone to injury because they are more sedentary and come to sports less physically fit.
Sedentary athletes
As a physical therapist, and sports performance specialist, this case is absolutely true!! So many of my young athletic patients with pain or injuries come to me out of shape, and usually overweight. They no longer play on their own, and only participate in "organized sports". These kids are not prepared for their sports, and often develop overuse injuries. And parents who bring their kids to me for sports performance often want to focus on make their kids faster, when in reality we need to work on weight loss, nutrition, and corrective exercises to prevent injuries and overuse injuries.
