1972 was the year the passage of Title IX ushered in a new era for
women's sports by mandating that girls and young women be given the
same opportunity to play sports as boys. Is Title IX working by
mandating that girls play a sport or has it eliminated a sport that your son wanted to play ? How is it working for our sons?

Well
I think it was, and is, something that was long overdue. The opportunity for girls and women, in sports, has never been better. The only thing I see at issue is the way many schools and colleges actually implement Title IX. It was never intended to be a "reason" for cutting boys sports programs, but many schools have. Sports like gymnastics, baseball, track, etc. (considered minor sports), especially at the collegiate level, have been cut in order to equalize opportunity. I really do not think that was the intent of the law. The idea was to bring girls sports up to the level of the boys not to reach some happy medium in the middle. I understand that money is an issue, however, that should be a last resort not the first option.

Title IX was maybe a good
Title IX was maybe a good idea on paper, but in reality it does not work. Why? The reason is very simple. On a whole, there are just not enough women who want to play sports at the college level. We've mandated a rule to include a group of people who do not want to be as involved as the rule states. I've heard of many instances where colleges have to recruit female athletes from the general student body to play a sport (like rowing) that they've never done before. Meanwhile, sports like men's track and cross country or wrestling are eliminated to make the numbers work. There is not an equivalent sport for women numbers wise as football, and that starts swaying the numbers immediately.
I agree with john, good
I agree with john, good idea...doesn't really seem to work. The idea is good because equality on the whole is a good idea. This, however, ignores the fact that, as john said, there aren't enough women who play sports in college, and until the numbers balance out (which may never happen, In my experience boys seem to be just more interested in sports, I realize this may be a generalization and it's the 21'st century, but this is just my own observation) title 9 will continue to be a poorly executed idea.
