HOME TEAM ADVANTAGE The Critical Role of Mothers in Youth Sports

[8]

Praise for Home Team Advantage:

"Already, because of Brooke de Lench's inspiration and dedication, a powerful movement of mothers dedicated to improving youth sports has taken form.

This immensely readable book assembles brilliantly the most important lessons she has learned, from parents and children on the edges of danger, as well as respected athletes, educators, physicians, trainers, and coaches.

Were every mother of a sports-loving child to read this brilliant assessment of the promise and peril that awaits them and their family, and to listen to her wise and thoughtful voice, I am confident that their bonds of love would be strengthened, and their fields of sport would become happier, safer, and more fulfilling places.

Brooke is a trustworthy messenger of essential knowledge for the many adults and children who are concerned to change the dangerous games of childhood. I wish that every pediatrician, school principal, and coach would read this book, too, because from their surprise and consternation at everything they didn't know, and their resolve to do something, would flow a parallel professional groundswell to involve and empower mothers."

Ahead of the Game: The Parent's Guide To Youth Sports Concussion

Rosemarie Scolaro Moser's [22] new book, Ahead of the Game: The Parent's Guide to Youth Sports Concussion (University Press of New England) is just what it says it is: a practical, no-nonsense guide for parents about sport concussions. Ahead of the Game

Moser brings to the subject matter a unique background: As a clinician who has treated hundreds if not thousands of concussed student-athletes at the Sports Concussion Center of New Jersey [23], she brings real world experience to the subject, not just as a neuropsychologist with specialized expertise on baseline and post-concussion neurocognitive testing [24] but in the management and treatment of concussions, including the academic accommodations [25] that are often needed during the sometimes long road to recovery.

Experts Weigh in on Preventing Exertional Heat Stroke at the Boston Marathon [32]
Marathon weather conditions can be unpredictable, from snow squalls to extreme heat, which may lead to increased risks of life-threatening medical emergencies, including exertional heat stroke (EHS). Monitoring for early signs of an injury is critical. It's also extremely helpful to know an individual's medical history, as athletes with a history of heat illness may be more susceptible to a repeat heat illness experience.
