Torn ACL

My 12 year old son has a partially torn ACL from being injured at a Middle School Football game. We have seen 2 orthopedic surgeons. One is well known around the area and treats most professional athletes in our area. The other is a pediatic ortho surgeon. Each has given us a different course of action to take. The pediatic ortho wants to repair the ACL with surgery and the other wants to rehab it and use a speciallized brace until he has finished growing. He still has open growth plates which makes him nervous to perform surgery. However, the pediatric surgeon is very confident that he can repair the ACL without doing damage to the growth plate. Anyone experience something similar that can give me some advice? My son wants to have the surgery along with the required 4-6 months of rehab after so that he can be ready to play football again next year. Also, playing football with the brace is no guarantee that he wouldn't tear the ACL completely or do other damage as well. Any advice will be welcomed! Thanks

pediatric torn acl

We are having the same problem. My 12 year old son tore his acl during football also. We just recently saw the orthopedic surgeon two days ago after waiting a month for the swelling to go down. He's recommendation was to have him wait 3 years until he has reached puberty and restricting his activities to no P.E.and very restricted activities. We currently have an appointment at the University of Iowa for a second opinion. From researching on the internet there looks like there are different ways that are available to fix the acl without going through the growth plate. His appointment is in two weeks. My son also is willing to do anything to continue playing. It's been a very upsetting thing for him and for us as parents. I would like to know what you find out and I would be happy to relay any info I have onto you.

my son also tore his acl in

my son also tore his acl in July. He is 11. We had surgery almost 4 months ago using a method that avoids the growth plates which is anatomical and symetrical. Dr. ganley at childrens in philly preformed the surgery. I would be more than happy to share my research with you. scott@Weitzfn.com is my e-mail. I know how stressful a time this is.

I can understand that such

I can understand that such an injury can be very disheartening for the child and discomforting for the parents. I think there should be a way to heal the injury quickly and your decision to go for a second opinion seems a great one.
